The Tri Tip Steak and Rib Rub is not spicy but does use black pepper in its base recipe just like the high end restaurants. The rub produces a wonderful golden color on the meat resulting from the natural caramelizing process that takes place due to the use of golden brown sugar.


We recommend seasoning your steak or ribs then allowing them to rest for at least 30-45 minutes to deliver their natural marinating strength of the dry rub.


We are always asked, how much dry rub is necessary to create a flavorful taste?  We believe that better than average results can be achieved when as little as 2 Tablespoons are sprinkled on to ribs or steaks.  Your best results will vary depending on how much seasoning you use. In addition with steaks make sure the grill is hot.  Ribs will cook differently than steaks but we still need to have a reasonable temperature to complete the cooking process and to allow the seasonings to penetrate the meat and leave its natural goodness.


Follow our steps for proper cleaning and preparation of the ribs.

When ready prep the ribs with our bbq secret yellow mustard technique. Then let the ribs rest for at least an hour. Follow that by rubbing in the tri-tip, steak and rib rub. Once the rub is on let the meat rest for an additional hour. Set your oven to 350 degrees. While the oven is reaching temperature set the ribs on the counter so that they come to room temperature. Place the ribs in foil in a metal baking pan. Cook for about two hours and remove from the oven. Open just the top of the foil and add your choice of Jake's Famous BBQ Sauce for Baby Back Ribs covering both sides. When completely basted leave the ribs turned with the meat side up and the concave shape underneath. Turn the oven to 400 degrees as close to broiling without actual broiling and cook for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Our job at this point is to create a caramelizing effect on the top of the ribs. Once you see the sauce bubbling on the top of the ribs you can remove the ribs to the top of the stove or kitchen counter covering them with the foil.

Let the ribs rest in the foil about 20 to 30 minutes. Locate a bowl that can be heated and add some sauce to the table. Warm the sauce to your preferred temperature. After the resting period remove the foil and slice. Add inside pairings of coleslaw, corn on the cob and baked potatoes to make this meal stand out.


Here's an alternate recipe to make oven ribs using our Tri-Tip, Steak and Rib Dry Rub


1. Clean ribs and remove the white membrane from the back of the ribs. Tip: Use a paper towel to grip the edge of the membrane and remove with a slow steady force.

2. Season the ribs generously with Jake's Famous Tri Tip, Steak and Rib Dry Rub seasoning.

3. Wrap the ribs and let rest in your refrigerator for a minimum of 2 hours and not more than 8 hours.

4. Preheat the oven to 275 degrees.

5. Place a layer of foil in the baking pan to catch juices from the meat.

6. Remove the ribs from the wrapping and place on the layer of foil.

7. Add the cup of Orange Juice to the bottom of the pan under the ribs.

8. Seal the ribs in the pan so that the meat will braise in the liquid.

9. Cook in the pan for 2 hours.

10. Collect the liquid from the ribs into a cooking pot.

11. Add the Honey, Jake's Mild BBQ Sauce, and Thyme.

12. Cook on High heat and reduce the liquid to a syrupy consistency.

13. Pour the syrupy sauce over the ribs.

14. At this point, you can use your grill or your broiler to create a glaze on the ribs. If using the grill bring it to a medium high heat then place the ribs on the grill for 10 minutes until grill marks show up. If using your broiler turn it to the broiler setting and place the ribs in the pan under the broiler for about 5 minutes. Check to ensure that the sauce does not burn.

15. After your perfect slow cooked ribs have completed cooking let rest for 3 minutes.

16. Serve.


We really like the above alternate method for making ribs. We find that the natural dry rub penetrates the meat event raising the meat to its peak of flavor. In addition, using Jake's Famous Mild Barbecue sauce combine with thyme just exceeded our levels and expectations for a quality result. We also like this recipe because a general novice can easily make these ribs right in their own stove or oven. The ability to manage heat for a consistent timeframe is what wins awards at barbecue contests not to mention the seasonings and end taste of the meat. Be sure to bring the sauce to a syrupy consistency this is needed to aid in the stickiness on the ribs. It will also help in producing a candy-like coating that will make your guests raise their eyebrows one they taste the results. Also, focus on getting as good a rack of ribs as you can. If you can buy your ribs at the butcher counter as opposed to a flash frozen plastic package then the better off the results. Give this recipe a try as soon as possible.
