Marinated Swedish Meatballs in BBQ Sauce Recipe

Marinated Swedish Meatballs in BBQ Sauce Recipe

BBQ Marinated Swedish Meatballs are a quick meal that is elegant for dinner guests.

This is one of the best and easiest meals we've ever made. I use this process almost exclusively when I perform demonstrations (demos) of our products in markets, stores and at festivals.

Ingredients Swedish Meatballs:

  • Precooked Turkey Meatballs
  • 1-1/2 Jars Jake's Original Mild Barbecue Sauce
  • 1 Crockpot with at least a 4 quart volume

Instructions:

We found that using Turkey meatballs presents the best opportunity to showcase the flavor of this all natural BBQ Sauce. Simply thaw meatballs if necessary to room temperature. Drain any excess water from the bag. Pour 1-1/2 jars of Jake's Original Mild BBQ Sauce into the Crock Pot and turn to high. Let BBQ sauce cook for at least 30 minutes. While BBQ Sauce is warming the meatballs are thawing to room temperature. Pour meatballs into warmed BBQ Sauce and stir in covering the meatballs completely.

Let meatballs cook in the Crock Pot for 45 minutes until BBQ Sauce is completely marinated into the meatballs. Reduce temperature to Medium for 5 minutes. Serve. The remaining BBQ Sauce can be served as a separate dipping dish after it has been warmed for two minutes. The end result of the full marinating process is the enveloping of the BBQ Sauce ending with a truly great appetizer and meal.

Serve and Enjoy Swedish Meatballs

I began making the Swedish style meatball alternate recipe about 10 years ago.  Right around the time I began doing product demonstrations I realized that while chicken and ribs were great they tended to be expensive and not everybody would want to sample those items.  It was somewhat difficult to maintain the level of warmth the samples needed without them going dry and losing flavor.  I tried all kinds of options trying at one time Italian meatballs which were seasoned with spices using mixes of pork and beef in the make up of the meatballs.  The Italian meatballs while tasty really altered the flavor of the barbecue sauce and the spices that were added for the samples.  The Italians meatballs were overpowering in their flavor and tended to turn some of the potential buyers off after one tasting.  I often found the sample plates hidden on shelves or nestled in trash cans not far away from the demo table.  So after a couple of weeks of sampling I decided to convert to chicken strips which were tasty at first but tended to dry out fast.  The chicken was placed in crockpots and covered with sauce.  After about 40 or 50 minutes the sauce tended to make the strips mushy and the customers would just toss them after one or two bites.

It took a day or so after that last experience to take a chance on a very neutral meatball.  The turkey meatball proved to be the best option for the sauces. The meatball could be placed frozen in the sauce mix and allowed to thaw until it reached temperature.  Once the meatball reached serving temperature the flavor of the meat was spectacular.  The flavor carried well and the meat did not fall apart.  Ultimately using the turkey meatballs proved to be the best option and the customers tended to favor that option more even asking how to make the recipe time and time again.

We found that using Turkey meatballs presents the best opportunity to showcase the flavor of this all natural BBQ Sauce. Simply thaw meatballs if necessary to room temperature. Drain any excess water from the bag. Pour 1-1/2 jars of Jake's Jake's Famous Maple Bourbon BBQ Sauce into the Crock Pot and turn to high. Let BBQ sauce cook for at least 30 minutes. While BBQ Sauce is warming the meatballs are thawing to room temperature. Pour meatballs into warmed BBQ Sauce and stir in covering the meatballs completely.

One the meatballs have thawed we'll want to rest them in the BBQ Sauce until they are completely marinated.  This process may take about 45 minutes.  After marination maintain the meatballs at a holding temperature by reducing the heat on the crock pot. Any additional BBQ sauce can be held aside or re-warmed and served as a dipping sauce.

You will find that the flavor of the BBQ Sauce completely permeates the Swedish meatballs and the rich texture of the Swedish meatballs is absolutely amazing as an appetizer or dinner meal.

Besides the Swedish meatballs the cooking of the BBQ Sauce leaves a wonderful aroma that can be enjoyed over an over again throughout your home.

Swedish Meatballs and Customer Feedback

This may seem as a simple one or two step meal but it is more complex in nature than most would think.  While this may not be a true "Swedish" meal it is a true representation of a Swedish favorite.  I've traveled to Europe, Norway and Sweden and the meal is exactly the type they would have in those countries.  But this is a favorite for the time pressed woman or man who needs something quick to serve up to the hungry friends and family.  The meal is easy to make in that it uses our barbecue sauce combined with Turkey meatballs to carry the sauce and the flavor.  The crock pot is practically a requirement as it allows the flavors to steep in the container over the tender meatballs.

This is also a meal I use when we do demos for potential customers at retail locations.  The meal takes about 25 minutes to effectively warm and pick up the flavors of the sauce.  The texture of the meat is awesome and rich.  I find that my potential customers truly enjoy the meatballs.  So many commented on the samples that I gave out recipe cards to help the customers.  This also helped in our sales of barbecue sauce.  So, overall we each benefited in the process.

Sometimes I will layer the meatballs over Al dente pasta and Kohlrabi and sometimes I will layer the meatballs over fluffy white rice.  No matter the addition you use the results will always be enjoyable.
