A multi-award winning steak rub, tri tip rub and natural dry rub is the culmination of 2 years of planning and development.  We set out to create a steak rub that captured the flavor of the well know Santa Maria region famous for Tri Tip.  We ended up creating an amazingly flavorful Tri Tip, Steak and Rib Rub seasoning.  We decided to find out what typifies the make up of a true Western region steak.  And by that we wanted to learn cuts of meat, styles of cooking, seasonings and spices used and when the experts considered the best time to cook a steak.  We traveled throughout the Mid West, South and Eastern segments of the country.  The experts believe in sparingly seasoning their steaks with simple amounts of salt and pepper.  However, when they want to pick up the flavor of a steak meat rub they look to create a taste experience for their guests.



Some will season with garlic, pepper and salt, while some will season with a sprinkle of kosher salt combined with paprika and onion powder backed by black pepper and so on.  One thing we learned is there really is no one way to season a steak.  Based on that knowledge we focused on a regional approach to steaks, ribs and tri tip.  We began by building the best steak seasoning we could then we married that with the simple essence of tri tip rubs.  Once achieved we set out to focus on ribs and the flavors that make them so memorable.  After a number of test blends of spices and seasonings we finally did it.  A natural dry meat rub so compelling that it is now in use auspiciously throughout the Western region to flavor steaks, ribs and Tri Tip smoked in some of the best grocery delicatessen and meat markets.

We set out to produce a rub that delivers true Western region flavors that are better in taste.  As we've said the cornerstone of the best barbecues begin with great natural bbq rubs. Spices are meant to enhance not overpower the flavor of whatever you are cooking and also to pair with whatever basting sauce you use.  Our BBQ Dry Rub for Steaks Ribs and Tri Tip produces a delicious almost golden caramelized color combined with coarse ground black pepper, garlic, onion, spices and brown sugar to create a slight sweetness . Here's how we make Tri Tip.


To cook Tri-Tip follow these steps. Season your Tri-Tip with Jake's Santa Maria Dry Rub - BUY NOW! . Allow Jake's Barbecue Seasoning Rub to marinate on the Santa Maria Tri Tip no less than 45 minutes before grilling. Barbecue grilling is the preferred method but your Tri-Tip can be oven cooked if desired. After seasoning and marinating place your Tri-Tip on the hottest part of the grill. Coals should be ashed over completely white before adding the meat. Sear the meat for 3-4 minutes per side. Once done move the meat to the coolest portion of the gill. Cover the grill with the lid and cook for approximately 15 minutes. After the 15-minute interval turn the Tri-Tip over and begin checking the Tri-Tip with a meat thermometer to determine the internal temperature, which in turn determines how well to cook the meat.


As the meat nears 15-20 Degrees of your desired temperature begin applying the Bourbon Glaze. Fully cover the Tri Tip and allow the glaze to cook on for 5 minutes, turn and apply again. Coat the meat at least 3 times on both sides ultimately allowing the glaze to bake on for fifteen minutes or more. Once done allow the meat to cool for 2-3 minutes then go to the cutting board. The glaze can be reapplied to the meat one last time just before cutting if you desire. Follow the scale below:


  • 125 to 130 Degrees --- Rare
  • 130 to 140 Degrees --- Medium Rare
  • 140 to 150 Degrees --- Medium
  • 150 to 160 Degrees --- Medium Well
  • 160 to 170 Degrees --- Well to Very Well
