This seems like a simple question for most but when you think about it, it is quite critical. Most people just assume that you wait until the charcoal is burned through then you just throw it in the trash to clear your grill. If you live in an apartment complex or have to leave suddenly from a park or campground there are a number of ways to put out the charcoal before leaving.
Of course the amount of charcoal and the type of charcoal being used will often times dictate the manner in which the charcoal is dealt with.
If you have time to spare you can do what I always do which is to close the bottom and top vents on the grill and allow the charcoal to burn itself out. This may take 3 or more hours but once done you can safely remove the charcoal and place it in a disposal container. Also, if you have a segment of charcoal you want to reuse simply remove sections between the burned and un-burned charcoal then close off all vents to burn off the oxygen and stop the charcoal from burning. This way you preserve your charcoal for future use.
