BBQ Sauce Styles and Types

Over the last few years there's been a lot of conversation on which barbecue sauce is best. Even more so there's been conversation about whether it should be written as bbq or barbecue or even barbq but no matter each of us has a preference. We generally know there are 6 basic styles of barbecue sauce. From California over to Colorado there is really no specific type of sauce just a mix of sauces related to the origins of the creators i.e., if the person came from Texas and moved to California then most likely they will create and sell a Texas style BBQ Sauce. My parents came from Arkansas so our style is focused on a California, Kansas, Arkansas blend that uses combinations of molasses, tomatoes, mustard, paprika and more.

Commonly Known Styles of BBQ Sauce:

Eastern Northern Carolina: No Tomatoes, peppers, hot sauce, vinegar Southern Carolina: Mustard, vinegar, salt Kentucky-Lexington: Ketchup, vinegar Texas: Beef Stock, vinegar, Worcestershire Kansas: Worcestershire, Ketchup, Molasses, vinegar, brown sugar Alabama: White Sauce, mayonnaise, garlic, onions, salt

These 6 basic styles set the tone for most barbecue across American. To see a complete discussion on the styles and differences see our link on Barbecue Styles.
